HIFU, RF microneedling or IPL — which is right for me?
By Anne · Lumos Skin, Basingstoke | 7 minute read
If you're considering a non-surgical skin treatment in Basingstoke, you've probably come across three names: HIFU, RF microneedling, and IPL. They all use energy to improve your skin — but they do very different things, and choosing the wrong one is the most common reason people feel disappointed with their results.
Here's the honest comparison I wish more people read before booking.
The short version
Each treatment works at a different depth and targets a different concern:
- HIFU reaches the deepest layer — the one a surgeon would tighten. Best for lifting and firming sagging skin along the jawline, neck and brow.
- RF microneedling works in the mid-layer — rebuilding collagen to refine texture, soften scarring and improve overall skin quality.
- IPL works at the surface — using light to clear pigmentation, sun damage and thread veins.
They're not competing treatments — they're complementary tools. Many people benefit from more than one, either in combination or at different times.
If your main concern is sagging or loss of firmness
When the jawline softens, jowls appear, or the neck and brow start to droop, you're dealing with laxity — and that's HIFU territory. HIFU delivers focused ultrasound to the SMAS layer, the deep structural layer that surgeons tighten during a facelift. It triggers collagen production at that depth, lifting and firming gradually over 8–12 weeks.
If you're searching for the best non-surgical facelift in Basingstoke or skin tightening in Hampshire, HIFU is the treatment most likely to deliver what you're looking for. It's the closest thing to a surgical result without surgery — but it's honest about its limits. If your skin is very loose, HIFU won't give you enough, and I'll tell you that at consultation.
Best for: Sagging skin, jawline, jowls, neck, brow
From: £225.00 · Downtime: None · Results last: ~12 months
If your main concern is texture, scarring or pores
Acne scarring, rough texture, enlarged pores, and general loss of skin quality live in the mid-layer — too deep for skincare, but not deep enough to need HIFU. This is where RF microneedling excels.
Fine needles create controlled channels in the skin while delivering radiofrequency energy directly into the dermis. The combination triggers a powerful collagen response — more than microneedling alone could achieve — refining texture, softening scarring, and firming the skin from within.
If you've been searching for acne scarring treatment in Basingstoke, RF microneedling is likely the right answer. It suits most skin types and tones, which is one of its real strengths. A course of three sessions is typical for scarring, with results building over two to three months.
Best for: Acne scarring, rough texture, enlarged pores, fine lines
From: £295 · Downtime: 2–3 hours · Results show: 2–12 weeks
If your main concern is pigmentation, sun damage or thread veins
Sun spots, age spots, uneven tone, and facial thread veins are surface-level concerns — and that's exactly where IPL works. It uses precisely filtered light to target excess pigment or visible blood vessels, breaking them down so the body clears them naturally over the following days and weeks.
IPL treats two distinct concerns, which is why Lumos Skin treats them as two separate treatments: IPL for pigmentation and IPL for thread veins. The light is tuned differently for each, and the treatment plan is specific to what you want to change.
Best for: Pigmentation & sun damage or Thread veins & redness
From: £85 · Downtime: Minimal · Course: 2–6 sessions
Can you have more than one?
Yes — and many people do. The three treatments work at different depths, so they don't conflict. A common combination is HIFU for lifting and firming, paired with RF microneedling for surface texture and quality. IPL can be layered in for pigmentation or redness once the skin has settled from other treatments.
The right combination depends on your skin, your priorities, and your budget — and that's something we work out together at consultation, not something I'll try to sell you upfront.

Why I don't offer injectables
You might notice that none of these treatments involve injectables — no fillers, no toxins, no needles. That's deliberate. These treatments work with your skin's own biology, rebuilding collagen and clearing concerns at the source. The results are gradual, natural, and unmistakably your own face.
I chose to focus exclusively on these three treatments because doing them genuinely well takes all of my time and training. I'd rather be excellent at three things than average at ten.
Still not sure?
That's exactly what a consultation is for. You don't need to decide before you arrive — you need someone to look at your skin honestly and tell you what will actually work. I'll assess your skin, explain your options in plain language, and give you a realistic plan. If the answer is "none of these," I'll tell you that too.
